Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin Traffic Signs.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

126 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment if the directional port traffic signs at Heuston Station, Dublin 8, funded by his Department directing heavy port traffic down the quays are contrary to Dublin Transport Initiative objectives. [11976/95]

The provision of signposting on public roads is the statutory responsibility of local authorities. I understand from Dublin Corporation that the quays are just one of several signposted routes to Dublin Port. The full implementation of a comprehensive heavy goods vehicle management system in the city centre along the lines recommended in the final report of the Dublin Transportation Initiative is contingent upon the completion of the C-Ring motorway and the Northern Port Access Route. It is only at that stage that the removal of heavy goods vehicle traffic from the quays will become a realistic option.
