Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport Study.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

140 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education when she received the report commissioned by the Combat Poverty Agency regarding the educational needs of the children of Cherry Orchard, Dublin 10; the main recommendations of that report; and her response to those recommendations. [12028/95]

I take it the Deputy is referring to a study on school transport needs in the Cherry Orchard area which I understand the Combat Poverty Agency was requested to carry out by the then Minister of State at the Department of Social Welfare, Deputy Burton. I have requested a copy of the report from the agency and will have its contents studied as a matter of urgency.

Ceist:

141 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the concerns, if any, she has regarding the additional financial burden on the parents of schoolgoing children in Cherry Orchard, Dublin 10, where the costs of school transport in the absence of a local school is beyond the means of many parents, resulting in unnecessary hardship and increased absenteeism; and the proposals, if any, she has to alleviate this burden. [12029/95]

I understand that the pupils in Cherry Orchard are within two miles of their nearest school and, therefore, are not eligible for free transport under the terms of the school transport scheme.
