Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - Future Demand for Pensions.

Charlie McCreevy

Ceist:

18 Mr. McCreevy asked the Minister for Finance the future proposals, if any, he has in the area of tax in general to deal with the demand for pensions that is set to escalate in future years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11848/95]

I am aware of the implications of the ageing of the population for public expenditure in the pensions area and the possible taxation consequences. These and other related issues were raised and considered in the final report of the National Pensions Board which was submitted to the Minister for Social Welfare in December 1993. The complex range of issues raised in the report are under study in the Department of Social Welfare. When that study has been completed and recommendations prepared, the issues involved including taxation, will be discussed with other interested Departments, including my own, and recommendations will be put to Government.
