Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - Officeholders' Accountability.

Michael Woods

Ceist:

34 Dr. Woods asked the Minister for Finance the progress, if any, he has made in relation to the Government's programme, A Government of Renewal, in ensuring that holders of high office in the State are more answerable and accountable to the legislature. [10327/95]

Since the formation of the Government, arrangements have been instituted under which the Governor of the Central Bank can be called before the Finance and General Affairs Committee and that on foot of this arrangement the Governor has appeared before that committee and answered questions put to him by members.

It is intended to deal with the other officeholders mentioned in the context of a Bill on privilege and compellability of witnesses appearing before Oireachtas committees which I hope to introduce in the coming weeks.
