Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - Savings Stamps Scheme.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

53 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if he intends to abolish the An Post savings stamps scheme. [11193/95]

I have no proposals to abolish the scheme at this time. However, as the cost of administering the scheme is high in relation to the amounts raised, the National Treasury Management Agency has been investigating with An Post possible alternatives to the present scheme. I am very conscious of the desirability of encouraging a thrifty attitude in our children and of helping them to form a savings habit which will stand them in good stead in later life. Accordingly, any proposed replacement scheme will have to be at least as effective as the current scheme in achieving those aims to obtain my approval. In the meantime, the "Cyril the Squirrel" savings stamps scheme will remain in place. I want to assure all those boys and girls currently in the scheme that they will be able to continue to save with An Post in the future.
