Vol. 455 No. 2

Written Answers. - Civil Service Severance Payments.

John O'Donoghue

Ceist:

59 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Finance whether the calculation formula used in determining severance payments for persons who work in the Office of the Attorney General is different from the calculation formula used in determining severance payments for other civil servants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10593/95]

The severance gratuity sanctioned recently in relation to an official who retired from the Office of the Attorney General was calculated in accordance with the terms of section 7 of the Superannuation and Pensions Act, 1963 which provides for the grant of a special severance gratuity to established civil servants who retire because their posts are surplus to operational requirements, or the retirement of a particular officer will facilitate a reorganisation of a Department/Office, aimed at ensuring greater efficiency and economy.

That section has also been applied to a limited number of individuals who likewise retired in exceptional circumstances.
