Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Recruits.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

148 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice the percentage of Garda recruits who fail to complete the designated course; the number of deferments at passing out stage; the number of gardaí leaving or being asked to leave during their post-passing out probationary period; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15041/95]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the figures for the period from 1 January 1994 to date were:

% who failed to complete the designated course

Number of deferments at passing out stage

Number of gardaí who left or were asked to leave during post passing out probation

4.2%

60

11

The percentage of Garda recruits who failed to complete the designated training course during the period 1/1/94 to the present date was, as indicated 4.2 per cent. The original number of recruits who were scheduled to complete different phases of the course (1-5 inclusive) during the period was 569 of which a total of 24 failed to complete. The reasons for failure, to complete included resignation for personal reasons, examination failure, poor performance and general unsuitability.
The number of deferments at passingout stage of the course during the period concerned was, as indicated, 60. This number was calculated by taking account of Probationers whose commencement of Phase 5 was deferred while on Phase 4 and those who were deferred while on Phase 5. The reasons for deferment included performance related difficulties, failure to complete course work to the required standard, general unsuitability and physical unfitness because of injury.
During the period under review there were eight resignations and three dismissals of members who had been attested to the Force on completion of Phase 3 but who were still serving in a probationary capacity.
