To my knowledge none of the present directors of Arramara Teoranta lives in Conamara, although, appropriately, the three ministerial appointees to the board, including the chairperson, are based in the western region.
Arramara Teoranta currently operates two plants in the west, at Kilkieran, County Galway and at Meenmore, County Donegal and gives valuable employment in coastal communities in the western region. There is considerable potential for value-added development of the seaweed resource as a natural resource-based industry with resultant benefits for employment and revenue for coastal communities along the western seaboard as a whole. I am keen to see that potential maximised and to ensure that Arramara Teoranta is well positioned to play a key role in those development opportunities.
