Vol. 457 No. 1

Written Answers. - Oral Contraceptives and Thromboembolism.

Eoin Ryan

Ceist:

99 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Health the research, if any, his Department has undertaken to study the link between prescribed combined oral contraceptive preparations and thromboembolism. [15023/95]

Limerick East): Pharmacovigilance is the responsibility of the National Drugs Advisory Board, which monitors all medicinal products, including combined oral contraceptives, on an ongoing basis. Such monitoring would include assessment of any adverse reactions reported directly to the board, together with any reports made available to it from other regulatory authorities or through published literature. I have already furnished to the Deputy, in response to an earlier question, details of the board's conclusions in relation to the preparations in question, and a copy of the advice which it issued to doctors on foot of these.
