Vol. 457 No. 5

Written Answers. - Use of Contract Staff.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

41 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Finance the Government's policy in relation to the use of contract personnel to perform duties traditionally carried out by the grades of service officers, service attendants and cleaners; whether individual Departments can make their own arrangements in relation to these areas of work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15739/95]

Under the system of administrative budgeting, which is in operation in most areas of the Civil Service, it is a matter for individual Departments and offices to decide, on the grounds of efficiency and effectiveness, on the relative merits of employing Civil Service staff as compared to engaging contract personnel to carry out the duties mentioned by the Deputy.
