I understand from the National Monuments and Historic Properties Service that the thatched house surveys were effectively begun in late 1986 by the Office of Public Works. Reports have been produced on surveys in nine counties since 1987 and it is my intention that this work shall continue. Copies of the survey reports have been furnished to the relevant local authorities, the Department of the Environment and different local and national bodies concerned with vernacular architecture.
