Vol. 457 No. 6

Written Answers. - Medical Indemnity Insurance.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

59 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health the amount his Department will spend in 1995 to reimburse hospitals and health boards for their own institutional malpractice insurance, for malpractice insurance/defence fees of their consultants and non-consultant hospital doctors and for malpractice insurance/defence fees of general practitioners who participate in the general medical service. [15890/95]

Limerick East): The precise cost of medical indemnity insurance for consultants, non-consultant hospital doctors and general practitioners in the General Medical Service Scheme for 1995 will not be available until the financial accounts of the agencies concerned for the current year are finalised. The approximate total cost for all health agencies for the three categories for 1995 is estimated as follows: consultants, £12.5 million; NCHDs, £4.0 million; GPs in the GMS, £1.0 million.

The latest available information for the cost of public liability insurance incurred by health boards and voluntary hospitals is in respect of 1994 and this amounted to £4.18 million.
