Vol. 457 No. 6

Written Answers. - Allegations Against Doctor.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

63 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health if he has sought a meeting with the management of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, County Louth, to discuss allegations against a doctor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15895/95]

Limerick East): As I stated during the adjournment debate on 19 October 1995 on this issue, I am extremely concerned about the allegations which have been made against a former staff member in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and I intend to pursue the matter with the hospital.

The hospital is currently engaged in a comprehensive review of all its procedures regarding patient contact. The first phase of this review — dealing with the hospital's own procedures and examining best practice elsewhere — is almost complete and I understand that it is to be considered by the hospital board before the end of this month.
I understand also that the North Eastern Health Board has advised the hospital that it should consider setting up an external expert group to review all aspects of the matter and I would expect that the hospital will give this proposal serious consideration.
After I have received the hospital's report and the North Eastern Health Board's views on it, I will then consider what further steps may be required.
