The Higher Education Authority has the statutory responsibility to advise me on the need and demand for higher education. The authority recommended that 800 higher diploma in education places be provided in 1995/96 and I accepted this recommendation. A total of 4,420 applications were received in respect of the 1995/96 academic year. The number of applicants would be considerably lower than this figure as many candidates apply to more than one college. The breakdown of places by reference to college, subject and subject groupings is shown in the following tables. The college authorities reserve the right to select the students they admit to any course. I understand that in selecting students for the higher diploma in education course the colleges have regard, inter alia, to academic attainments, the appropriateness of a student's degree subjects, relevant teaching experience and the quality of a student's application.
Subject Acceptances 1995/96*.
