Ceist:

121 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the number of educational institutions in the State which are involved in training doctors; the number of students completing their courses each year; the breakdown by type of programme and individual institution; and the per capita cost to the State for students completing such programme. [16378/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 120 and 121 together and to provide statistical details by way of tabular statements which I will circulate in the Official Report.

There are six educational institutions in the university sector involved in the training of engineers. A total of 1,237 full-time primary degree students in these institutions graduated as engineers in 1993 according to latest available information. The institutions in question and the numbers graduating from each by programme since 1990 are shown in Table 1.
Figures available from the National Council for Educational Awards (NCEA) indicate that in the regional technical college sector the following numbers of students graduated with primary degrees in engineering between 1990 and 1993.

All the above students were graduates of the Cork Regional Technical College programmes in chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering.
There are five educational institutions in the university sector involved in the training of doctors. A total of 467 full-time primary degree students in these institutions graduated as doctors in 1994 according to latest available information. The institutions in question and the numbers graduating from each since 1990 are shown in Table 2.
There is no detailed information readily available to my Department whereby theper capita cost to the State for students completing specific third-level education programmes in individual institutions may be determined. The recurrent cost to the State for a third-level student in 1994 is estimated at £3,900.
