Vol. 457 No. 8

Written Answers. - Trade Relations.

David Andrews

Ceist:

152 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the efforts, if any, that are being made by his Department to develop trade between Ireland and Turkey. [16479/95]

The value of our trade with Turkey has grown from £31.4 million in 1989 to £59.6 million in 1994. Exports have shown very strong growth from £8.6 million in 1989 to £32.2 million in 1994. The prospects for trade in both directions will be further enhanced by Turkey's accession to the World Trade Organisation earlier this year and, even more significantly, by the establishment of a Customs Union with the EU from 1 January 1996. An Bord Tráchtála will continue to monitor the market closely, and I understand that in order to further develop its potential for Irish companies, it is considering the appointment of a Trade Consultant there.
