23 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, made towards the provision of a national 50 metre swimming pool; the action, if any, taken in relation to the feasibility study regarding its provision that was carried out by her Department 12 months ago; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16199/95]

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

32 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, regarding the provision of a much needed 50 metre swimming pool; the proposed location; the timescale for completion; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16371/95]

Michael McDowell

Ceist:

79 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, she has taken to secure the construction of an indoor 50 metre championship swimming pool in Ireland; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16291/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23, 32 and 79 together.

Deputies will be aware that my Department commissioned a feasibility study to examine all the options for the provision of a national 50 metre swimming pool complex to cater for the training needs of Ireland's swimmers and for national and international competitions in addition to serving as a community facility. The authors of the feasibility study recommend that a swimming pool-leisure complex, costing an estimated £17 million, be built on a site in Tallaght Town Centre.

A project of this scale requires very careful and detailed consideration before any decision can be made in the matter in view of the overall capital and operating costs involved. Because of its implications for Exchequer funding I am not in a position to say at this stage when a decision about the project can be made.
