Vol. 457 No. 8

Written Answers. - Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme.

Joe Walsh

Ceist:

25 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education the action she intends to take in relation to the future of the vocational training opportunity scheme in view of the recent announcement that the scheme is to be cut back by 1,000 places. [13943/95]

Liam Fitzgerald

Ceist:

73 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education if she has received a submission from the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed regarding her recent decision to cut £5 million from the vocational training opportunities scheme; if she has responded to the details of this submission; if so, if she will make available a copy of her response; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15978/95]

Helen Keogh

Ceist:

84 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to re-examine the vocational training opportunities scheme in view of current unemployment trends, specifically among the long-term unemployed. [16288/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 25, 73 and 84 together.

I am committed to expanding and developing VTOS to meet demand as resources permit. As I indicated in my contribution to the debate on a recent Dáil motion concerning VTOS, I envisage that such expansion and development of the scheme will be very much in the context of the operation of the area-based partnerships and the local employment services.

I replied in September last to correspondence from the Irish National Organisation for the Unemployed regarding VTOS. I am arranging to have a copy of my letter forwarded to Deputy Fitzgerald. My Department has since received further correspondence from the INOU. This is at present under consideration in my Department.
