Vol. 457 No. 8

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Post.

Godfrey Timmins

Ceist:

38 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education the reason an ex quota remedial post has not been granted to a school (details supplied) in County Waterford in view of the fact that most students in need of remedial assistance in west Waterford are referred to this school and such a provision has been given the highest priority in the area by her Department; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16394/95]

I approved the allocation of an additional 73 ex-quota remedial posts to second level schools this year. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need and having regard to existing teaching provision in schools. Given this fact and the limited number of posts available, I was not in a position to allocate a remedial post to the school in question this year. The position will be considered again when next it is possible to allocate additional remedial posts.

I should point out that this school was allocated a disadvantaged post in 1990 and the school authorities were advised at that time that consideration should be given to using the post for the purposes of providing remedial help to the pupils in the school.
