My Department is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of all the issues surrounding medical indemnity and medical malpractice. As part of this review the Department is in the process of appointing specialist advisers in these fields. This review will include both the financial arrangements made for the provision of indemnity cover as well as an examination of possible alternative arrangements to the tort system for dealing with allegations of medical negligence or malpractice.
