Vol. 458 No. 7

Written Questions. - Court Reports.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

64 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the procedures and rules that apply in relation to private individuals involved in High Court cases who request copies of the official court stenographic reports; if such reports are available free of charge; and if they can be made available in respect of a case (details supplied). [17585/95]

Court stenographers are employed by the High Court in chancery and family law cases only and in family law cases the transcript is provided free to the parties involved. Persons involved in chancery cases must pay the appropriate fee for the transcript.

In personal injury actions such as that referred to in the Deputy's question, a stenographer is not employed by the court but is usually engaged by one of the parties who pays the daily attendance fee of the stenographer. A party requiring a transcript of the evidence in such a case would have to deal directly with the relevant stenographer and pay the fee charged for the transcript.
