Vol. 459 No. 1

Written Answers. - Nutrition Report

James Leonard

Ceist:

110 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the nutrition advisory group report on the low consumption of fruit and vegetables in comparison with other EU countries; and if he will consider a promotion for the consumption of fruit and vegetables similar to the US potato campaign which was so effective some years ago. [17943/95]

I have seen the report referred to by the Deputy. Under the Bord Glas Act, 1990, responsibility for the promotion of fruit and vegetables, including the detailed arrangements therefore, is vested in An Bord Glas. As the Deputy is no doubt aware An Bord Glas has promoted a wide range of horticultural products to the consumer in recent years including for example potatoes, tomatoes, apples and soft fruit. Under its Development Plan 1994-1999 An Bord Glas will implement a generic promotion programme and, as indicated in the plan, the health benefits of increased consumption will be highlighted.
