Vol. 459 No. 4

Written Answers. - Arterial Drainage.

James Leonard

Ceist:

50 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Finance if arterial drainage has been discussed with the Northern Ireland authorities in the context of the peace initiative in view of flooding problems in border regions. [18288/95]

While arterial drainage is the subject of regular discussion between the Office of Public Works and their drainage counterparts in Northern Ireland, there are no specific proposals for works in the context of the peace initiative.

James Leonard

Ceist:

51 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Finance the proposals, if any, he has to amend the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18289/95]

The Arterial Drainage Act, 1945 was amended earlier this year by the Arterial Drainage (Amendment) Act, 1995.

Under the 1995 Act the powers of the commissioners of public works were extended to enable them to carry out localised flood relief schemes in addition to their existing powers to carry out comprehensive drainage schemes for entire river catchments. A number of other ancillary amendments were also included.

There is no additional amending legislation proposed at this time.
