Vol. 459 No. 4

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Seán Ryan — the proposals, if any, currently under examination for a second commercial airport at Baldonnel, County Dublin; (2) Deputy O'Dea — the need to improve the arrangements for hearing family law cases in view of the imminent introduction of new legislation following the success of the divorce referendum; (3) Deputy Frances Fitzgerald — the need for an independent inspectorate for children's residential homes in view of the emerging disclosures in relation to Trudder House, County Wicklow, and other residential centres; (4) Deputy Molloy — the need to approve a £50,000 grant under the voluntary and community services scheme for the Inishbofin Development Co. Ltd., to enable construction of the community centre to be completed; (5) Deputy Séamus Brennan — the current position regarding the Telecom Éireann strategic alliance negotiations in light of reports that British Telecom is reviewing its commitment to the process and the fact that jobs have been lost to the Republic; (6) Deputy Lynch — the urgent need to review the conditions under which public services are granted; (7) Deputy Michael Kitt — when sanction will be given for an extension of the Ballymacward/Caltra/Castleblakeney Group Water Scheme, County Galway to Newtown/Tycooley; (8) Deputy Raphael Burke — the need to provide a subsidy to tomato growers of 50p per box to alleviate the problems caused by low prices in 1995; (9) Deputy Hughes — the current position in relation to the Westport/Louis-burgh water augmentation scheme; (10) Deputy O'Donoghue — the need to prevent a recurrence of the breakdown in communication which took place in relation to the review of the sentence imposed on a Dundalk restaurateur; (11) Deputy Eoin Ryan — the need for Dublin Bus to expand its late night service over the Christmas period in view of the serious shortage of taxis and the laudable campaign to tackle drink driving; (12) Deputy Quill — the 47 per cent rise in first time young psychotic admissions to public patient hospitals between February and November 1995, and the established link between these admissions and drug abuse; (13) Deputy Michael Ahern — the current position in relation to building of the new school in Mallow, County Cork, in view of the unsuitable accommodation available at present at Davis College; (14) Deputy Cullen — the reason the new regional command structure of the Garda is not being placed in Waterford where the Garda regional headquarters have been located.

The matters raised by Deputies O'Dea, O'Donoghue, Ray Burke and Séamus Brennan have been selected for discussion.

I do not wish to disturb or annoy the Leas-Cheann Comhairle but I lodged a private notice question today in connection with a very important issue which has arisen in my constituency as a result of an importation of wild boar through Rosslare. I wish to make a late appeal on behalf of my constituents to have a veterinary officer on duty this evening at Rosslare Port when the Pembroke ferry arrives to inspect that shipment of livestock. There could be horrendous consequences for the Irish pig industry, particularly in the Mitchelstown area——

This is not the forum to raise the issue, Deputy.

This is the House in which to raise it.

I cannot permit the Deputy to proceed further.

I want a message to be sent to the Department——

I do not want a BSE situation to arise in the pig industry because of the importation of those animals.

That is understood. The Deputy has been advised of the ruling on this matter and I cannot permit him to proceed further with it.
