Vol. 459 No. 5

Written Answers. - Removal of British Base.

Liam Fitzgerald

Ceist:

13 Mr. L. Fitzgerald asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the representations, if any, he has made regarding the removal of the fortified British barracks from the GAA pitch at Crossmaglen in view of the peace process. [18307/95]

The Government has taken a close interest in the difficulties caused to the Crossmaglen Rangers GAA Club by the proximity of the joint British Army/RUC base. Difficulties have arisen from the compulsory requisitioning of land from the GAA, from works on the base and also from the British Army's attitude to the club's expansion plans. These matters have been raised by the Government within the framework of the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference. It is the Government's hope that the new security situation will allow for a full and fair resolution of the outstanding issues arising from the impact of the security force base on the club's grounds.

I will continue to closely monitor the situation and, where appropriate, to pursue matters raised by the club through the framework of the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference.
