Vol. 459 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pre-Retirement Pension Age.

Joe Walsh

Ceist:

86 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he intends to reduce the pre-retirement pension age from 55 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18420/95]

The pre-retirement allowance, which was introduced in 1990 and is an optional scheme, relieves older unemployed people of the necessity of `signing on' each week at their social welfare local office and provides them with alternative arrangements for receiving their unemployment payments. Payment is made by way of payable orders encashable at post offices.

The allowance was initially introduced for a long-term unemployed persons aged 60 or over but was reduced to 58 years of age in 1991 and to 55 years of age in 1992. There are no plans at the present time to reduce the age limit below 55 years.
