Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Fatalities.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

263 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the measures, if any, he will take to reduce the spiralling number of road fatalities which occurred in 1995 which was a 5 per cent increase on 1994; and his views on whether the relaxation of the previous anti-drink drive measures is partly responsible for this road death increase. [1021/96]

I am very concerned that, following a period of years in which there was a sustained reduction in road fatalities, the number of people who died as a result of road accidents in 1995 showed an increase on 1994. I remain committed to a firm course of action to secure the maximum level of safety for road users and I have already indicated publicly and in the House that I am having a full assessment carried out into all aspects of policy which relate to road safety.

There has been no relaxation in the application and enforcement of measures relating to drink driving. The Road Traffic Act, 1995, provides a link between the penalty imposed and the severity of the offence while retaining the blood alcohol limit of 80 milligrammes. I am satisfied that the 1994 Act, as amended in 1995, continues to provide the basis for effective enforcement.
