207 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice if she will ensure that the Garda make available accident statistics for various roads and junctions, when requested, for a small fee if necessary to members of the general public in the interest of openness, transparency and accountability; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1765/96]
I have been informed by the Garda authorities that statistics regarding traffic accidents are not compiled by them in such a way as to readily provide the details which the Deputy requests. I am further advised that to do so would incur a disproportionate amount of Garda time and resources which would not be warranted.
Information in relation to all road traffic accidents reported to the Garda authorities is supplied by the Garda to the National Roads Authority. A detailed annual report on road accidents is prepared and published by that authority.
