Vol. 460 No. 7

Written Answers - Radiation Emissions Measurements.

Pat the Cope Gallagher

Ceist:

56 Mr. P. Gallagher (Donegal South West) asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will insist that base line measurements of electro magnetic radiation emissions be taken before any radiation emitting equipment is installed on a telecommunications mast at Alt na gCapall, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1443/96]

I have no statutory responsibility in relation to environmental or health aspects of telecommunications masts or the equipment thereon. These masts and any associated equipment require planning permission. Decisions on planning permission are matters for the local authority planning offices and, on appeal An Bord Pleanála. It is my understanding that it is open to the planning authorities in issuing planning permission to insist that transmission equipment must comply with international standards relating to radiation emissions.
