M. J. Nolan

Ceist:

154 Mr. Nolan asked the Minister for Education the names of the teaching centres which have been approved to date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2530/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 153 and 154 together. An application by Carlow Teachers' Study Group for recognition as an education centre has been received in my Department. Officials of my Department met representatives of the study group in 1995.

The matter of the development of the network of education centres is currently under active consideration. The position of Carlow Teachers' Study Group will be given consideration when decisions are taken in the matter. The Deputy will be interested to know that my Department has funded a number of courses organised by the study group during 1995.

Pending the full development of the education centre network, three part-time education centres were upgraded to full-time status in 1994. These were in Carrick-on-Shannon, Portlaoise and Tralee.
