Vol. 461 No. 1

Written Answers - Drug Seizures.

John Ellis

Ceist:

190 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Justice the dates and times of all joint drug seizures by the Naval authorities in 1994. [2572/96]

As I stated in my answer of 23 January 1996 to a question tabled by the Deputy, seizures of drugs at sea in operations in which the Garda and the Naval Service are involved are, in all circumstances, made by the Garda. Accordingly, the question of joint seizures does not arise. Details of seizures made since 1994 which have had an input from the Naval Service were supplied in the above answer.

Ceist:

191 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Justice the point and time surveillance commenced and finished regarding the seizure of 15,000 kilograms of cannabis resin at Urlingford, County Kilkenny; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2573/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the disclosure of the information sought by the Deputy concerning operational matters, including the point and time of commencement and termination of surveillance, would be contrary to established practice and may prejudice the investigation and possible subsequent court proceedings. In the circumstances, I do not propose to make any further comment.
