Vol. 461 No. 1

Written Answers - Cinema and Theatre Ticket Costs.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

231 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if his attention has been drawn to the hidden cost for people buying tickets at certain cinemas and theatres in Dublin; and if he will ensure that such charges are notified in advance to the public; and if he will exercise some control over this hidden cost. [2414/96]

Official control on the prices of goods and charges for services was discontinued with the disbandment of the National Prices Commission in 1986. In the meantime successive Governments have placed increasing emphasis on the promotion of fair and free competition aimed at improving consumer choice and information.

However, I have asked the Director of Consumer Affairs to advise me on the incidence of the practice of levying booking fees or additional charges on admission tickets to cinemas, theatres and other entertainments and the amount of these fees or charges which shall be the subject of a survey by the director.
