Vol. 461 No. 1

Written Answers - Meeting with Senator Mitchell.

Matt Brennan

Ceist:

41 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, he has to meet the Chairman of the International Commission on Arms Decommissioning, Senator George Mitchell. [18586/95]

I met Senator Mitchell, and the other two members of the international body, on two occasions in the course of the discharge of the mandate given to them by the Irish and British Governments.

On 18 December 1995, the Minister for Justice and I presented a detailed submission on behalf of the Government to the international body. A second meeting between the Taoiseach and I and the international body took place on 12 January 1996.

After he met with President Clinton last week to discuss the report of the international body, Senator Mitchell indicated that he would be maintaining his interest in the peace process. I certainly look forward to meeting him again in the future. I reiterate the appreciation of the Government and people of Ireland to him, and to Harri Holkeri and John de Chastelain, for the balanced and wise manner in which they discharged their mandate from the two Governments.
