Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

132 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Education when she will be in a position to appoint a remedial teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Galway. [2268/96]

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

152 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Education if an application has been made for a remedial teacher for a school (details supplied) in County Galway; the names of the other schools, if any, in the school grouping; and when a decision will be made on the appointment of the teacher. [2528/96]

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

155 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education when the next allocation of remedial teachers will be sanctioned by her Department; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2531/96]

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

156 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to appoint a remedial teacher to two schools (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and if these schools are on a priority list. [2532/96]

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 132, 152, 155 and 156 together. I am not in a position at this stage to indicate whether I will be able to allocate any additional remedial teachers to the primary school sector during 1996.

I allocated 55 remedial teaching posts to primary schools with effect from September 1995. These posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need following the collection and analysis of data by my Department's primary inspectorate. This allocation brings the total number of remedial teachers now in place in the primary sector to 1,188.

I am keeping the question of further appointments in this area under regular review as resources become available. The needs of all schools, including the schools to which the Deputies referred, will be considered within this context. My Department has no record of an application for a remedial teacher post for the school to which Deputy Kitt referred.
