Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme Review.

Kathleen Lynch

Ceist:

15 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, she has to re-examine the criminal injuries compensation scheme with a view to restoring the pain and suffering clause; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3887/96]

The Government's policy document A Government of Renewal includes a commitment to review the criminal injuries compensation scheme. The question of restoration of the pain and suffering clause is obviously an important issue which will be considered as part of the review of the scheme. As Deputies will be aware, the scheme was amended in 1986 and the pain and suffering clause was removed.

The review of the scheme is under way in my Department at the moment and I expect to receive shortly a report, which will set out the options open to the Government.

Any proposals which I might have, following detailed examination of these matters, will have to be considered and approved by the Government before being announced in the normal way.
