Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Local Employment Service.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

233 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will accede to the request from the Clondalking partnership (details supplied) in Dublin 22 to extend the local employment service to that area in view of the fact that the Clondalkin partnership is in a position to submit a plan for the service and to co-ordinate its immediate implementation unlike some of the other partnerships whose lack of readiness could delay the extension of the local employment service until late 1997 or early 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5452/96]

Mary Harney

Ceist:

235 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he intends to create a local employment service within the Clondalkin, Dublin 22, are during 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5580/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 233 and 235 together.

My plans for 1996 are that the local employment service should be established and consolidated in 14 key areas. These consist of the 12 original partnership areas and two non-partnership areas, Clare and Kildare. I believe it is preferable to assess the progress of these 14 areas before extending the service countrywide. What we learn about the current phase will be of benefit to other areas in establishing the service in the future.

I am aware of the special circumstances in the Clondalkin area, in particular the relationship to the Tallaght partnership and the operation of the FÁS pilot employment action centre. I am currently considering how best the Clondalkin partnership can be accommodated in the establishment of the current phase of the local employment service.
