Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Public Service Redundancy.

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

20 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance the concerns, if any, he has at the amount of money expended in redundancy deals in the public service. [4263/96]

I am satisfied that the redundancy arrangements introduced in the public service are appropriate.

In drawing up the terms of the redundancy packages, very careful attention is paid to the financial costs and benefits involved. As Minister for Finance, I have to be certain that all the benefits, both financial and otherwise, outweigh the costs.

The initial financial cost of any scheme must be looked at in the light of savings and other benefits which may accrue over a number of years and, of course, different schemes will have different financial pay-back periods.
