Ceist:

47 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Finance the total yield of residential property tax for the last three years; the proportion paid by persons living in Dublin city and county; and if he will make a statement regarding his intentions relating to the retention or abolition of residential property tax. [5545/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 47 together.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the yield from residential property tax for each of the last three years is as follows:—

Year

Yield

£million

1995

12.1

1994

14.3

1993

8.5

The proportion of tax paid by persons living in Dublin city and county for the valuation dates 5 April 1995 and 5 April 1994 is as follows:

Valuation Date

Proportion

5 April 1995

77%

5 April 1994

75%

The proportion for the valuation date 5 April 1993 is not available.
The programme A Government of Renewal indicated that the future of residential property tax would be considered in the context of a professional study of local government financing which is at present being undertaken by my colleague, the Minister for the Environment, Deputy Howlin.
I will evaluate all aspects of residential property tax in light of the findings of the study when completed.
