Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Regional Policy.

Martin Cullen

Ceist:

49 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for Finance the Government's policy regarding the regions; if his attention has been drawn to the changes in regional boundaries being undertaken by State agencies and semi-State companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3515/96]

Consideration is currently being given to the preparation of proposals for the rationalisation of regional boundaries generally. The policy in relation to regional boundaries is that, as far as possible, the regional structure used for the administration of the activities of Government Departments and public authorities should be aligned with the boundaries of the new regional authorities. As regards the developments in State sponsored bodies, it must be emphasised that the nature of the activities of different bodies impose constraints— demographic, technological etc.—which may pose practical obstacles to the development of a standard set of regional boundaries.
