Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Medical Card.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

95 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Health if he will review the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 16 who is not in receipt of any income, who has diabetes, emphysema, asthma, and diabetic foot ulcers, and who has been refused supplementary welfare and-or a medical card on the grounds of his wife's income in spite of the fact that they have not lived as husband and wife for over 27 years; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the person concerned previously held a medical card when his physical condition was better than it is now; his views on the fact that this person's supply of insulin and other essential life saving medication will only last until about 11 March 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5504/96]

Limerick East): A decision in relation to a person's eligibility for a medical card is a matter for the chief executive officer of the relevant health board. In the case of the person referred to by the Deputy, I understand that the chief executive officer of the Eastern Health Board has reviewed the person's eligibility and has decided to issue a personal medical card on the grounds of medical hardship.
