Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - National Symphony Orchestra Administration.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

111 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht his views on the merits of taking responsibility for the National Symphony Orchestra from RTÉ and placing it within the remit of the National Concert Hall and its administrators with appropriate transfer of funding; his views on whether this would assist in improved financial management and use of resources for both the NSO and NCH; his further views on whether this could better rationalise the position of the NSO in relation to its cultural responsibilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5412/96]

I established the PIANO Group to make any recommendations it considered desirable regarding, inter alia, the organisational arrangements that would enhance the development of the National Symphony Orchestra. The report of the group after an in depth consideration of the matter did not recommend an organisational structure along the lines outlined by the Deputy. I would have to say that prima facie I would not see a specific cultural or organisational synergy in the Deputy's suggestion.
