Vol. 463 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Board Expenditure.

James Leonard

Ceist:

53 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Health the per capita expenditure for each health board for the last accounting period for which returns are available. [5122/96]

Limerick East): The 1995 audited accounts for the health boards have not yet been submitted to my Department. However, based on the 1996 approved levels of net expenditure the per capita expenditure for each board is as follows:

Per Capita Expenditure

£

Eastern Health Board

290

Midland Health Board

451

Mid-Western Health Board

389

North-Eastern Health Board

330

North-Western Health Board

542

South-Eastern Health Board

434

Southern Health Board

403

Western Health Board

515

The figures are based on the 1991 census. It should be noted that the figures relate only to the approved level of expenditure for the boards and do not include expenditure for voluntary hospitals, directly funded mental handicap homes or the GMS in each health board area. I would also point out that expenditure per head of population is an unweighted average which does not take into account a number of demographic and geographical factors. The difference in the cost of health care in each region is also influenced by other factors such as access to higher specialties, density of population and the present stage of development of the services.
