Vol. 463 No. 1

Written Answers. - General Medical Service Study Leave.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

57 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if general practitioners are to be paid by the general medical service for attending IMO regional meetings to promote new general medical scheme drug prescribing arrangements as part of the drug savings scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5814/96]

Limerick East): During the review of the General Medical Services scheme in 1994, it was agreed, inter alia, that participating general practitioners would be entitled to an additional three days study leave related to particular service requirements as determined by the relevant health board. This includes attendance at approved continuing medical education sessions and meetings to discuss the indicative drug target scheme.

Doctors who avail of this study leave facility are entitled to claim the standard rate of locum subsidy. The relevant payments are made by the General Medical Services (Payments) Board.
