Vol. 463 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Oncology Unit.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

60 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the progress, if any, made regarding a meeting with his Department and Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin 12, in connection with the overcrowding crisis in the oncology unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5817/96]

Limerick East): At the request of clinicians from the oncology unit, Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, a meeting was held with Department of Health officials on 4 March 1996, to discuss a number of issues related to the work of the oncology unit. Arising from this meeting, the hospital authorities undertook to submit further details of the problems being experienced in the unit to my Department officials. Arrangements are also being made for a medical officer from my Department to visit the unit on 19 March 1996 to assess any problems at first hand. Once this process has been completed, I will then be in a position to review the situation at the unit in the context of the overall cancer strategy which is currently in preparation in my Department.
