Vol. 463 No. 1

Written Answers. - Education Centres.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Ceist:

89 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Education the number and location of teacher centres throughout the country; the status of each of these centres; when it is proposed to update the status of these centres which don't have full time status; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5842/96]

There are currently nine education centres (formally known as teachers' centres) with full-time directors, located as follows: three covering the Dublin and surrounding regions, Blackrock, Drumcondra and Clondalkin and one each in Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Tralee, Carrick-on-Shannon and Portlaoise.

There are 14 education centres, whose directors operate on a part-time basis, located as follows: Athlone, Bandon, Castlebar, Carraroe, Cavan, Dundalk, Ennis, Galway, Monaghan, Navan, Sligo, Tarbert, Thurles, Tuam and Dingle.

The matter of the further development of the network of education centres is currently under consideration. Decisions have not yet been made. The question of the change in status for any part-time education centre is being considered in the context of the overall development of the network.
