Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Central Adoption Register.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

128 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health if he will ensure that adoptees and parents who gave up children for adoption have immediate access to their records and relevant information; if he will establish a national contact register in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7116/96]

Joe Costello

Ceist:

132 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Health if a national central register is being established for Ireland to enable adoptees and parents who gave children up for adoption to access information; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7166/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 128 and 132 together.

It is my intention to bring forward at the earliest possible date a Bill to provide for the establishment of a national adoption contact register to assist adopted persons and birth parents who wish to re-establish contact with one another. The issue of access to birth records will be considered in the context of a contact register.
