Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cork School Facilities.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

170 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding an application for a school hall by a school (details supplied) in Cork: her views on whether this facility is both necessary and urgent; and when funding will be made available for this provision. [6905/96]

Batt O'Keeffe

Ceist:

184 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education when she intends to make funding available for an interschool indoor communal facility for schools, roll number 1899L and 19000E. [6995/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 170 and 184 together.

The current position on the application for a school hall in the case referred to by the Deputy is that due to the current level of contractual commitments on the primary school building programme it is not possible to provide grant-aid for this facility at this time. I am not in a position to state when funds will be available.

While I am anxious to extend the provision of general purpose facilities in primary schools, the pace at which this can be achieved will be dictated by the financial resources available and the priority must remain the provision of essential classroom accommodation.
