Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - British Beef Products.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

260 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the extent of British produced beef sold in Irish supermarkets up to recent weeks; and the tonnage of fresh beef sold particularly by supermarket chains throughout this State. [6983/96]

Since 28 March there is a total ban on imports of beef and beef products from the UK. Statistics are not available on the amount of British produced beef sold in Irish supermarkets up to that date. Since Ireland is a large surplus producer of beef the quantities imported are, of necessity, very limited. The total quantity of fresh beef sold on the Irish market is estimated at 65,000/70,000 tonnes, half of which is sold in supermarkets.
