Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Staffing of State Bodies.

Mary O'Rourke

Ceist:

285 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for the Marine the name, location and number of staff employed in each agency, organisation or body under the aegis of his Department which has a responsibility in relation to job creation, including tourism, enterprise promotion, community, rural or urban development and EU initiatives, including disbursement of grant aid. [6936/96]

The name and location of the relevant State agencies operating under the aegis of my Department, together with overall staffing numbers, follows. Details of the name, location and numbers of staff employed in each of the agencies in the specified areas of activity are a matter for the agencies themselves.

My Department and bodies under its aegis have a responsibility for the sustainable development of Ireland's marine resources. Within that mandate, creating new employment and sustaining existing employment are key priorities.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara is the main development agency for the sea fisheries and aquaculture sectors and administers, under the overall supervision of the Department, national and EU grant-aid schemes for those sectors under the Operational Programme for Fisheries 1994-1999 and the EU Community Initiative PESCA.

The Central Fisheries Board and the seven regional fisheries boards have responsibility for the development of Ireland's inland fisheries and sea angling resources. They have a central role in the administration of the Tourism Angling Measure of the Operational Programme for Tourism 1994-1999, which aims to increase employment and income through the development of tourism angling facilities throughout the State.

The Marine Institute supports the economic development of Irish marine resources through its central role in research and technology development. The institute is involved, inter alia, in the administration of the Marine Research Measure of the Operational Programme for Fisheries 1994-1999.

In addition, harbour authorities play an important role in support of national economic growth and tourism development through the provision of efficient and competitive port facilities.
