Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Prison Sentences.

Dan Wallace

Ceist:

82 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for Justice the aggregate residual number of person years remaining to be served by those currently detained in our prison system; and the total number of prisoners with two or more years remaining to be served. [7095/96]

Information is not maintained in such a way as to facilitate the calculation of the residual number of person years remaining to be served by those currently in custody. It would involve the manual examination of over 2,000 files and the collation and calculation of the information required. Such a use of staff time could not be justified at present.

The total number of persons with two or more years remaining to be served, with effect from 2 April 1996, is 482. In addition, there are 64 persons currently in custody serving sentences of penal servitude for life.
